Blog Contributions

These blog pieces provide an informal view on some of the academic concepts explored in this website.

  • My Rights in the Maternity System: A feminist graphic zine inspired by the Freebirth Study

This guest blog in Graphic Medicine introduces readers to the graphic zine I created with Michelle Freeman, Alice Spencer, Emma Ashworth and Anne Glover. It highlights our thought processes as we drew on our experiences and the accounts of interviewees from the Freebirth Study to create a zine that promoted women’s rights in pregnancy and childbirth.

  • Working with Creatives to Disseminate Research

This blog explores the production of my short video with interviewees from The Freebirth Study, birth activists, mothers and creatives. I highlight a unique way in which research findings can be disseminated beyond typical academic journal articles.

  • Getting "Done" for Concealment of Pregnancy

This is a contribution to the Journal of Medical Ethics blog. It outlines women’s rights to autonomy and bodily integrity. I then question policies on concealment of pregnancy that presuppose women are under a legal obligation to inform health care staff of their pregnancy status.

    The Language of Birth Trauma

This article resulted from an invitation to submit a text to the Obstetric Violence Blog at Durham University. It is featured in a series exploring the importance of language and raises concern with the use of the term ‘birth trauma’ to describe acts of obstetric violence.
